ABOUT US

I was born on the island of Jamaica, but I currently reside in South Carolina. My love for writing began during college, however, it wasn’t until the birth of my son that I started writing for children. It was difficult for me to find inspiring books that featured African American boys, so I decided to create stories for my son and other children. I began writing and illustrating multicultural books that are fun to read while promoting important conversations between parent/teacher and child. This birth 123 Mango Tree LLC—a company created in 2007 to promote literacy through reading, music, and art.

Under the new imprint, Nadine Johnson Books, we create wholesome, character-building books that engage and empower children. From picture books to middle grade books, our unique stories motivate children to keep reading, which is necessary to improve their literacy skills.

As a parent and middle grade teacher, I know the importance of early literacy. My goal is to provide children—especially reluctant readers—with relevant stories to help them enjoy reading while inspiring them to make a positive difference in the world.

I encourage all parents to start reading to their children as soon as they enter the world, and to make reading a part of their daily routine. This is essential because sharing books with children at an early age helps them to develop language skills, begin enjoying books, and starts them on a path to reading for themselves.

Workshops/Progams

My Little Library

The My Little Library program was created to help children in need build a home library. Having immediate access to books increases a child's love for reading. This helps children develop strong  literacy skills and create a solid foundation for future learning. Over the years, we have donated more than one hundred books to shelters and local, underserved schools. You can support this worthwhile cause by emailing us HERE.

Early Literacy Workshop
This program is designed for future and current parents who want to learn how to develop an early literacy program for their child. The program also discusses how to build a child's mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health.

Self-Publishing 101 Coaching
This workshop provides insight into the world of self-publishing. Participants will learn how self-publishing works, how to format a book, and how to understand printing terms and specification so that they can publish their own high-quality book. Participants will also learn how to avoid the many pitfalls that plague self-publishers. I've worked as a consultant and graphic designer for various publishing companies and authors for the past 12 years, so I have learned the ins and outs of publishing. I'll also draw on my experience of self-publishing nine of my own books.

Last Night I Dreamt Workshop
This workshop teaches the basic fundamentals of writing and illustrating a book by giving children the opportunity to create their own books. The books they create are a positive reflection of themselves, their abilities, and their hopes and dreams. They are encouraged to use their books as motivation to achieve their goals.
